TOWER HAMLETS COMMUNITY OPEN DAY
As well as growing food at folx farm, we hope for it to be a space of community. Our FAF project is our first move into this space. Piloting a way to support communities in the areas of restaurants we supply produce to, as well as the communities that we as founders are embedded in personally and through social justice work. It’s been important then for us to not only grow food for these communities but to welcome them to the farm to see where the food is grown and to share what we’re doing as well as offer ways to get involved.
Group Tour, Oct 2024
“It was truly beautiful to be able to connect with land and all that grows and lives alongside it whilst surrounded by people that are in deep community with each other. ”
Squash harvest
For our first F.A.F open day, we welcomed 18 people, residents, community workers, growers and social just activists all working within or connected to Tower Hamlets to the farm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in October. The day started with a tour, followed by a delicious pot luck lunch. Everyone then mucked in to get some work done on the F.A.F polytunnel. We made and planted an outside garlic bed, harvested squash, sowed broad beans and turned beds over ready for winter. It was a great opportunity for people to forge new connections and get a better understanding of our visions for the project and the wider farm.
Flipping beds
A asked everyone that attended the open day a series of questions on their experiences. Here’s what a few had to say…
“I just loved it. Very warm and welcoming, the intro bit at the start was hugely helpful in finding out more about all the amazing people there, the food pot luck was lovely and catered for all dietary requirements, and the feeling of feet on earth, earth that is growing food for Tower Hamlets residents and beyond, was incredible. Loved getting my hands dirty and my sweat on helping out too.”
